Meet a Monster Erotica Author – Interview with Helen Atreya

???????????????????????????On #MonsterMonday, this blog features interviews with the people who write and publish monster erotica. Why Is Monster Erotica So Popular? Well, we know! Today’s author is Helen Atreya.

Tell me about your stories and the monsters they feature!

Alien Brood is by far my most popular series.  It features the Tnocia, a race of aliens who resemble octopuses with a few notable differences: they have dozens of tentacles, and to finish gestating their eggs they need a willing, mammal host.  Stranded on our planet by a mysterious accident, they’ve had to form bonds with some (lucky!) human women to ensure the continuation of their species.

The series starts out with a haunted house style story: Mia, who is the main character through all five books, takes a maid job at a rundown mansion in the middle of nowhere.  Soon she realizes that there are strange things going on there, and she is quickly entangled in the Tnocia’s desperate struggle for survival.  Along with Lexxi, her newfound alien lover, Mia and the other women of Hawthorn Manor hatch a sexy and at times harrowing plan to secure the aliens’ survival.  Along the way there’s plenty of lesbian and alien sex to be had!

Alien Brood was also my first try at the “alien impregnation” sub-subgenre, which was something I had never really seen myself writing.  Once I got into, though, I definitely understood the appeal!

What do you like to call your category? “Monster erotica”, “beast porn”, something else?

Monster erotica, definitely!  Porn has the connotation that it’s exclusively about the sex, or that the only point is the sex, and that’s just not what I write.  There is sex featured prominently, of course, but always in service to the story, the characters and ultimately their relationships with one another.

If there was no such category as monster erotica, what would you call your work?

Hentai Novelization!  Probably not, but hentai is where I draw a ton of my inspiration and visual references from.

That said, I don’t think we’re in any danger of the monster erotica category going away any time soon.  The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife is two hundred years old and I doubt it was the first time someone was turned on by the idea of women and horny monsters together.

Why do you write and read monster erotica? What’s the appeal?

Why do some people like feet, or whips?  Monster erotica is most definitely my kink and there’s no way around that.  I also find writing extremely satisfying, both the act of doing it and then putting it on display for others to enjoy, so I suppose that makes me a bit of a monster erotica exhibitionist!

Beyond that, erotica is one of the few genres where people will actually buy and read shorter pieces.  Most of my stories are in the ten to twenty thousand word range but there are a lot of erotica authors getting attention in the 5 thousand range, too.  That reality fits very nicely with my short attention span!

Favorite sexy beast?

Tentacle monsters!  They can do so many different things to you all at the same time!  All of the fun of a threesome (foursome!  more!) with none of the hassle of having to go out and find those extra people.

What else do you write?

Including Alien Brood, I have 16 stories available on Amazon right now.  Most of them are of the monster erotica variety, but there’s also Fangbang which is a vampire “menage” (I hate that word, but it seems to be the delicate way to say gangbang) story and Who’s Watching, which actually involves nothing fantastical whatsoever!  It was also my first story to get hidden by Amazon’s adult content filter, probably because the cover has two people on the front actually touching each other (oh no!).  Sexy Commutes was a fun one; it’s two stories about different women finding sexual liberation by having sex in the middle of rush hour (on a train and on a gridlocked highway).

Kiss/kill/marry: Bigfoot, a Grey alien, the Loch Ness Monster

Put Loch Ness in a nature preserve!  There only seems to be one of her, we need to make sure that she doesn’t go extinct!

Bigfoot definitely needs kisses and cuddles!  He’s just so big and sad and fuzzy, like some kind of forbidden teddy bear.  That’s not the sort of thing to base a long-term relationship on, though.

That leaves the Grey.  Between the probing and the abduction, I’ll bet they’re into all kinds of freaky sex… I would definitely fuck his brains out, then steal his spaceship and leave him naked and asleep on the side of a desert highway.  Because, you know, spaceship!  Also: I’m not the marrying type 😉

What’s the best writing advice you ever heard?

I only heard part of it, but there was a segment on NPR a few months ago where this very proper-sounding British linguistics professor spent a half hour or more cursing out Strunk and White, basically breaking down every “rule” in that damned book and explaining not only why the rule was crap but also how Strunk and White constantly broke the rule themselves, sometimes even in the same chapter!  So, “The Elements of Style is horseshit and everything you learned about grammar in college is wrong” would be my favorite writing advice.

That said, I’ve been rejected by every Publisher I submitted to… so, maybe don’t follow my writing advice 😉

Anything else you’d like to say?

Go have some fun sex!  Life is too short to for missionary.
